Lettter from Peter Ross

Dear sir/madam,

Hello. My name is Peter Ross. I’m a journalist based in Glasgow, and I am getting in touch to ask whether you would be willing to become involved in a story I’m writing, please?

I am writing a feature for The Guardian newspaper’s weekend magazine section about Edinburgh’s private gardens. It will be published next year, to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the New Town, but I am starting to work on it now. I want to get a sense of the way the gardens change through the seasons.

Ever since I was a child, I have found the gardens fascinating. I remember, as a little boy, on the rare occasions I would visit Edinburgh they seemed at once inviting and forbidding.

Over the years, I have been frustrated by the coverage the gardens get in the press. The story tends to be rather negative and to do with the question of whether it’s right that this private space exists in the city. I’m not really interested in that side of it. I’m much more interested in the human stories of the gardens – Who uses them? Who tends them? What do they mean to people? I imagine that there will be residents for whom these gardens have been a pleasure from childhood to old age. People will have fallen in love in these gardens. Ashes will have been scattered there. I’d love to tell the stories of people and place. The secret life, if you will, of Edinburgh’s hidden gardens.

I’ve been discussing this for some time with the Queen Street Gardens people, but I want to widen it out to include as many of the city’s private gardens as possible. I’d really appreciate it if you could contact me to discuss whether it might be possible for me to write about the gardens of the feu, please. I hope you will be able to help me identify some people amongst your residents who might make especially good interviewees – people with a story to tell, people who are real characters etc.

If you would like to see examples of my work, please visit my website, www.peterross.scot. It’s important to me that the people I write about, whatever the story, feel they have been treated with intelligence and respect.
